Everything they knew (about elephant evolution) is wrong. The BBC reports that researchers at Oxford and Stony Brook analyzed fossil teeth and identified a 37 million year old ancestor to the elephant. The research proposes that elephants, hippo, tapir, hyrax, manatee, and dugong are members of the same ancient family. The elephant has previously been thought to have evolved from terrestrial species.
